What is the difference between polishing and waxing?

Polish corrects and wax protects. A polish is a fine abrasive that levels a microscopic layer of clear coat, which removes light swirls and dullness and brings back reflection. Wax or a sealant sits on top of the paint and wears away over weeks to months. Most tired paint needs both, polish first and protection after, and Brad's own advice on his website's price list is that paint should be enhanced or corrected before any ceramic coating.

What does paint enhancement or correction cost?

On Brad's price sheet, paint work comes with protection on top. Paint Enhancement + Ceramic Sealant starts at $650, Paint Enhancement + 3-Year Ceramic Coating at $800, Paint Enhancement + 5-Year Ceramic Coating at $1,000, and Paint Correction + Ceramic Coating at $1,500. A Clay Bar Treatment & Ceramic Sealant, the cleaning and protection step on its own, starts at $195. Every price is subject to inspection, because paint condition varies more than anything else on a vehicle.

Enhancement or correction?

An enhancement balances cutting and finishing in a lighter pass. It suits paint with light swirls, haze from years of washing and dullness from sun. A correction uses a heavier compound first and a fine polish after it. It removes far more, takes longer and suits dark paint that shows every swirl, or a vehicle that has been through years of brush washes.

Clear coat is thin, so no correction removes every scratch. A scratch you can catch with a fingernail usually goes deeper than polish can safely reach. Brad checks the paint first and tells you what can come out before any work starts.

Why polish before a ceramic coating?

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. Brad's price list on his current website says it plainly: it is always recommended to do a paint enhancement or correction before a ceramic coating, because skipping that step locks imperfections into the coating. That is also why he offers Paint Correction + Ceramic Coating as one service.

Faded plastic trim makes polished paint look older than it is. Brad's Plastic & Trim Restoration + Protection starts at $150 and brings black trim back alongside the paint.

How the work goes

Done carefully, start to finish.

  • Clean, smooth paint first

A wash and clay treatment so nothing bonded to the paint gets dragged around by the polisher.

  • Inspected in strong light

Swirls and haze hide in shade. Bright light shows what the paint actually needs.

  • Machine polishing

Enhancement for light swirls and dullness, correction when the paint needs heavier cutting and a fine finish.

  • Trim and edges protected

Polish can stain textured trim and dry out rubber seals, so those are kept clear.

  • Protection on top

Polished paint is bare. A ceramic sealant or coating goes on to protect the finish.

  • Checked again in the sun

The paint is checked in direct light after polishing to see what improved and what remains.

Frequently asked

Waxing & Polishing questions.

How much does paint correction cost?

Paint Correction + Ceramic Coating starts at $1,500. Paint Enhancement + Ceramic Sealant starts at $650. All prices are starting prices and subject to inspection.

What is the difference between polish and wax?

Polish removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to smooth it. Wax sits on top and protects. Most paint gets both, polish first.

Will polishing remove every scratch?

No. Polishing reduces swirls and haze. Deeper scratches can need touch-up or paint work, and Brad checks the paint first.

Do I need polishing before a coating?

Brad recommends it. Enhancement or correction before a ceramic coating removes swirls and oxidation, maximizes gloss and helps the coating bond, instead of locking imperfections in.

Is polishing bad for clear coat?

Not when it is done when needed. Each polish removes a very small amount, which is why it is not repeated on every wash.

Can faded trim be fixed too?

Yes. Plastic & Trim Restoration + Protection starts at $150.
